How To Start Locs With Two-Strand Twists

Did you know that you can start locs with two-strand twists? I know I didn’t when I first started researching ways to start my loc journey. I only knew of the coil method, loc extensions, and interlocking. I have been getting a ton of questions on what the two strand twist method is and how you can start your locs this way. I will also share some advantages and disadvantages to starting your locs with two-strand twists.

The two-strand twist method really getting popular over recent years as a way to start your locs. Two strand twists are similar to if you were to start your locs with braids or plaits. Starting with the two strand twist method, the two-strand twists hold the hair and the roots begin locking first. With two-strand twists, your locs will form thicker than when you first start your locs, so take that into consideration. My locs were not as thick at the time of installation but have thickened up over the months.  If you are looking for thick locs then starting locs with two-strand twists may be the right option for you.

What Are Two Strand Twists?

Two strand twists are a common hairstyle in the natural hair community. When I first started my journey, many didnt even know that I was locing my hair because the two-strand twist style is such a popular style that many naturalistas wear. The two-strand twist method, in my opinion, is one of the easiest ways to start locs.

Advantages of Starting Your Locs With Two Strand Twists

  • Resembles a hairstyle (mini twists) while you wait for your locs to mature.
  • Easy to start, many start their own locs at home. ( I got my first instillation by a professional loctician)
  • Locs will turn out thick.
  • Good if you have long hair.

Disadvantages Of Starting Your Locs With Two Strand Twists

  • It could take longer for your twist pattern to disappear. It could take anywhere from 6 months to 2 years. Everyone is different so remember not to compare your hair to others.
  • Your twists may unravel. In the beginning, I had several twists that unraveled daily. I made a knot and tied them together so that they didnt continue to unravel.

Are you looking to start your loc journey with two-strand twists? I hope this post helped you understand the two strand twist loc process better.
