How To Go Natural

how to go natural

You want to know how to go natural? You have decided that you are done relaxing your hair and are ready to take the plunge but you have no idea where to begin on how to go natural? Well, you are at the right place girl! I have been natural since 2009 and I am about to tell you all the in and outs on how to go natural. Get out your pen and paper and get ready to take some notes!

Choose a Route

First things first, in order to start your natural hair journey you will either need to do the big chop or transition. There is no right or wrong way to go natural but the choice is yours. The big chop is when your cut all the relaxer from your hair from the beginning. You will rock a twa (teeny weeny afro) or a really low cut to start off with. With the big chop you start fresh with no relaxer in sight. The second option is to transition, which is what I did. Transitioning is when you grow out your hair while gradually cutting the relaxed ends from your hair.

Develop a Regimen

This is the second important step to going natural. You will need to develop a regimen that consists of the following:

  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Deep conditioner
  • Protein treatment (optional)
  • Styling

Check out this post on how to develop your natural hair regimen.

Have Patience

Having patience is the #1 key to going natural. Let me tell you that you will not see results overnight! It takes time to develop a regimen and find products that work for you. Its a process and once you really sit down and take it all in you will be good. Keep a journal on what works for you and what does not so that you stay on top of your journey.

Try Different Styles

I know that styling your hair can be a bit frustrating especially if you transition because your two textures are very different. But I can assure you girl that it gets easier! Go to YouTube I mean its google for videos! YouTube has every type of hairstyle that you ever wanted to try out on there so get on it! Check out this post on a few styles to try during your transition to natural.

Don’t Give Up!

I know that you may want to just say screw this and give up but don’t. It will be worth it in the end. Remember that nothing happens overnight honey, so its going to take some time! Hang in there.
